Private Party Catering Melbourne
Birthdays, anniversaries and backyard celebrations — sized right, priced fairly, and cooked with the same care as our biggest weddings.
Party Caterers Who Come To You
Private party catering is where our drop-off service earns its keep. We cook in our South Kingsville kitchen, deliver hot and ready at the time you nominate, and either leave you to it or stay and run the service — whichever suits the party. Birthdays, milestones, anniversaries, naming ceremonies, kitty parties, retirements, housewarmings: the food scales from a 15-person lunch to a 200-guest backyard event without changing kitchens. If you would rather not host at home, three Melbourne venues are ours. Same team, same food, someone else cleaning up.- Drop-off, buffet or fully staffed service

South Kingsville · Williamstown · Newport · Yarraville · Altona North · Point Cook · Hoppers Crossing · Tarneit · West Footscray
Most private party work runs across the inner west and the growth corridors — South Kingsville, Williamstown, Newport, Yarraville and Altona North, then further out to Point Cook, Werribee, Hoppers Crossing and Tarneit. The older streets have narrow frontages, rear laneways and tight side access, so equipment is carried rather than wheeled. Newer estates give wide driveways but long walks from kerb to yard. Hired community halls in West Footscray and Sunshine usually have kitchenettes rather than commercial kitchens, which changes how food is held. Summer brings marquee hire and shade planning; winter pushes everything indoors and shrinks the workable buffet footprint.
Private Party Catering — Your Questions Answered
Yes, we cater at private homes right across Melbourne, with the inner west and western suburbs being our closest run from South Kingsville. We work in backyards, garages, driveways and inside homes. We bring serving equipment, burners and staff where needed. For addresses further out we may apply a travel allowance, which we confirm when quoting.
We take private party bookings from around twenty to twenty five guests. Below that number the set-up and travel cost outweighs what you would pay, so a drop-off order of trays usually makes more sense. Tell us your guest count when you enquire and we will tell you honestly whether a served menu or a drop-off suits you better.
You need to provide table space for the serving line and a parking spot close to it. That is the minimum. Everything else — chafing dishes, burners, serving spoons, transport carriers — comes with us. If you want the food under cover, arrange a marquee or clear a garage bay, because Melbourne weather will decide that for you otherwise.
Yes, hired halls are one of the most common private party venues we work in. Send us the hall’s conditions of hire before you book us. We need to know the access time, the finish time, whether trestles and a fridge are supplied, and what the cleaning requirement is. We plan our set-up and pack-down inside those rules.
We cook vegetarian dishes separately with their own utensils and serve them on their own section of the line, clearly separated from meat dishes. A typical mixed party menu runs two vegetarian mains to two meat mains. Tell us how many of your guests are vegetarian and we adjust the quantities rather than just the dish list.
Book two to three weeks ahead for a standard weekend private party, and longer if your date falls in October through December or near Diwali. Smaller mid-week parties can sometimes be arranged in under a week. Final guest numbers are due about seven days out, since that is when we lock in ordering and staffing.
Yes, with access confirmed first. Apartment buildings in Docklands and Footscray often need a lift booking, a loading bay permit from building management, and after-hours access codes. Give us the building manager’s contact and we will sort the logistics. Where lift access is restricted, drop-off trays or a hallway-free canape format works better than full buffet equipment.
We bring what the buffet needs, and you tell us which bits you already have. Many people own two or three trestles and only need one or two more. Confirm table count two weeks out so we load correctly. If you are hiring a hall, check whether its tables are included in the hire fee before adding them to the catering order.
We work to whatever cover exists on the day, so build a wet plan at booking. Hot food cannot sit under open sky in Melbourne weather. A marquee, carport, garage or verandah with at least a three by three metre footprint keeps the buffet running. Tell us the backup location in advance and we set up there without changing the timing.
Yes. Splitting food into a main service and a later supper release suits parties running six hours or more. The second release is usually lighter and faster to set — chaat, rolls, a sweet or a snack platter. Lock the second release time at booking so the kitchen loads the right quantities and the team stays on site.
We do not supply alcohol for private functions at your own property. You buy your own, and we can supply staff to pour, clear glassware and manage the drinks table where a licensed context allows it. At our own venues, licensed bar service is handled on site. For hired halls, check the hall’s liquor conditions before bringing anything in.
Four to six weeks suits most private parties, and two weeks is workable for smaller numbers. Saturdays between October and March book out earliest, along with the weeks around Diwali and Eid. If your date is fixed, lock catering before you finalise the guest list — numbers can be adjusted later, the date cannot.
Indian Catering Brought To Your Own Address
Tandoori Flames caters private parties across Melbourne — backyards in Yarraville, double garages in Newport, hired community halls in Altona North. You pick the address, we bring the food, the gear and the crew. Our base is South Kingsville, so the inner west is a short run for our vans. We cover Point Cook, Hoppers Crossing, Tarneit and across to the CBD as well. Guest counts from a small sit-down through to a couple of hundred standing all work.
Most private parties we cater sit between thirty and one hundred and fifty guests. The brief is usually the same: good Punjabi food, enough of it, served hot, with nobody from the family stuck in the kitchen. We quote on a set menu, confirm numbers a week out, arrive with chafing dishes and burners, and take the rubbish with us. If your kitchen is small or non-existent, say so early — we plan around it rather than around you.

We work without a kitchen
Backyards and hired halls rarely have a working commercial kitchen. We cook off-site, transport in insulated carriers and hold temperature with our own burners and chafing dishes. All we need is a flat table, clearance for the gear and somewhere to park within carrying distance of the serving area.
Portions scaled to real appetites
Home parties run long and guests graze. We build quantities for a party that starts at six and finishes late, not for one tidy sitting. That means generous rice and bread volumes, two curry choices minimum, and entrees that hold well on a platter instead of collapsing after ten minutes.
Clean handover at the end
We bring our own serving equipment, collect it at pack-down, and bag food waste to take away. Benches get wiped, the serving table comes back to you clear. Nobody in your family should be scraping trays at midnight because the caterer left the washing-up behind.

How A Backyard Job Actually Runs On The Day
We arrive around ninety minutes before your service time. First job is setting the serving line — usually a six foot trestle under cover, with the tandoor items at the front and curries at the back so the queue keeps moving. If rain is forecast we ask you to sort a marquee or a garage bay in advance, because a serving line in the open does not work in Melbourne weather. Access matters more than space: a side gate we can carry chafing dishes through saves a lot of time.
For a hired hall in Williamstown or West Footscray, check your booking terms before you confirm with us. Many halls have a hard finish time, a noise cut-off and a rule about who does the final clean. Send us the venue conditions and we will fit our pack-down inside them. We also need to know about power points if you want hot holding beyond a couple of hours, and whether the hall supplies trestles or we bring our own.
Matching Service Style To Your Party Space
Use this to work out which catering format suits your guest numbers and the space you actually have at home or in a hired hall.
| Guest count | Service style that works | Staff on site | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15—30 | Drop-off trays with reheating notes | None, or one attendant | Backyard lunches and small family gatherings where you host yourself |
| 30—60 | Buffet set up on your own trestle tables | One or two attendants | Garage parties, carports, hired community rooms with a kitchenette |
| 60—120 | Full buffet with chafers, linen and bins | Two to four attendants | Hired halls, large backyards with flat access and a marquee |
| 120—200 | Double-sided buffet or two serving points | Four to six attendants | Scout halls, church halls and community centres with two exits |
| Any size, roaming format | Passed canapes plus one hot station | Two to five, depending on flow | Standing parties where guests move between house and yard |
| Any size, late finish | Buffet plus a second supper release | Core team stays to pack down | Parties running past midnight that need food twice |
Four Things That Go Wrong At Home Parties
Measuring the space too late
People book numbers before checking where food actually goes. A 120-guest buffet needs around six metres of table run plus room behind for staff. Measure your yard, garage or hall before confirming. Send photos of the serving area early so trestle count, chafer layout and the walk from unloading point to buffet are all planned in advance.
Ignoring the power supply
Home circuits trip when urns, warmers and a DJ rig share one line. Check which outlets sit on which circuit, and whether an outdoor power point exists. Gas chafers avoid the problem entirely but need clearance from fabric and low ceilings. Flag the setup at booking so equipment is chosen to match what the property can carry.
Forgetting the neighbours
Backyard functions in tight streets like Yarraville and Seddon trigger noise complaints fast. Council noise limits usually bite after 10pm on weeknights. Shift the loud part of the night earlier, keep amplified music away from shared fences, and tell neighbours the date. A party shut down at 10.30pm wastes the food you ordered.
No plan for leftovers
Guests leave, trays stay, and nobody has containers. Decide before the day who takes food home and whether you want it packed into portions during pack-down. Hot food held over two hours needs to be cooled properly or discarded. Ask for the food safety guidance in writing so the handover is clean.
