Melbourne Vietnamese Catering

Fresh, light and genuinely crowd-pleasing — Vietnamese catering is the cuisine we recommend most often for mixed guest lists, because almost nobody refuses a rice paper roll. We cater Vietnamese weddings, Tet celebrations, corporate functions and private parties across Melbourne, with live rice-paper-roll and pho stations where the venue allows. Most of the menu is naturally gluten-free, and vegetarian versions of nearly every dish are available.
  • Live rice-paper-roll station
  • Live pho station
  • Naturally gluten-free across much of the menu
  • Strong vegetarian and vegan options
  • Tet and Lunar New Year catering
  • Pairs well on mixed-cuisine menus

Where We Cater

Melbourne-Wide, From Our South Kingsville Kitchen

Our production kitchen is in South Kingsville and our vans go everywhere — the inner west, the CBD, the bayside suburbs, the north and the outer west. Any delivery charge is quoted up front, never added later.

South Kingsville · Williamstown · Newport · Yarraville · Altona North · Point Cook · Hoppers Crossing · Tarneit · West Footscray

Melbourne’s Vietnamese community is anchored in Footscray, Richmond, Springvale and St Albans, with Victoria Street and Hopkins Street still the commercial heart, and newer concentrations in Sunshine, Braybrook, Werribee and Keilor East. Events run through community association halls, Buddhist temples and pagodas, Catholic parish halls, and hired function rooms. The calendar peaks sharply at Tet in late January or February, with Vu Lan in August and the Mid-Autumn Festival bringing further gatherings. Weddings, engagement ceremonies and full-month baby celebrations run year round, with a noticeable lift through spring and the pre-Tet weeks.

FAQs

Vietnamese Catering — Your Questions Answered

What Vietnamese dishes do you cater?+
Rice paper rolls, banh mi, pho, bun cha, lemongrass chicken and beef skewers, crispy spring rolls, vermicelli salad bowls, com tam and Vietnamese iced coffee.
Can you do a live rice-paper-roll station?+
Yes, and it is one of our most popular live stations. Guests build their own rolls, which works especially well for cocktail-style events and younger crowds.
Is Vietnamese food good for a mixed guest list?+
Very. It is fresh, light and approachable, and the flavours are familiar enough that nervous eaters will try it. It also pairs well with heavier cuisines on a mixed menu.
Do you serve pho at events?+
Yes, as a live station. Broth is prepared in our kitchen and finished on site so it is served properly rather than sitting in a chafing dish.
What are the vegetarian options?+
Tofu and vegetable rice paper rolls, vegetarian spring rolls, tofu lemongrass skewers, vermicelli salad bowls and vegetarian pho. Fish sauce can be substituted on request.
Can you cater gluten-free Vietnamese?+
Largely yes — rice paper, rice noodles and most of the salads are naturally gluten-free. Tell us at enquiry and we will build the menu accordingly.
Is Vietnamese catering suitable for a wedding?+
Yes, particularly for cocktail receptions and for weddings joining Vietnamese and other families. Rice paper rolls and skewers work beautifully as roaming canapés.
Can you combine Vietnamese with Indian or Chinese?+
Yes. Vietnamese with Indian is a pairing we do often for mixed-heritage weddings, and the contrast between fresh and rich works in its favour.
How does Vietnamese food hold up over a long service?+
Skewers, rice dishes and salads hold well. Rice paper rolls are best made fresh, which is why we recommend the live station for longer events.
Do you cater Lunar New Year events?+
Yes. Tet celebrations are a regular part of our calendar and book out early.
What drinks or finishes do you offer?+
Vietnamese iced coffee is the classic finish and goes down well at any time of day. We also serve che desserts and fresh fruit.
What is the minimum guest count?+
Around 15. For smaller numbers drop-off catering with pre-made rolls and skewers works better than a live station.
Can you deliver Vietnamese catering or does it need on-site staff?+

Both work, but the menu changes. Drop-off suits banh mi, spring rolls, salads, grilled meats and rice. Rice paper rolls, banh xeo and pho need staff on site because they must be assembled during service. Tell us your format and we will build the menu around what will actually arrive in good condition.

Why do rice paper rolls have to be made on site?+

Because the wrappers dry out and fuse within a couple of hours of rolling. A roll made at the kitchen and delivered later has cracked edges, stuck sides and limp herbs inside. We bring the fillings prepped and chilled and roll in continuous batches through service, so what guests pick up was made minutes earlier.

Do you cater pho for events?+

Yes, as a staffed station rather than a buffet tray. The broth is simmered in our kitchen and held hot in insulated urns, noodles are blanched on site in small batches, and guests finish their own bowls with beef, herbs, sprouts, lime and chilli. It needs bench space and a power point, and it is a strong choice for cooler months.

Is Vietnamese catering good for a corporate lunch?+

Yes, it is one of the best options for a working day. The food is light, most of it eats cleanly with one hand, and portions do not leave the room sluggish for the afternoon session. Banh mi sliders, rice paper rolls, bun cha bowls and salads cover a mixed office without needing anything explained.

Can you cater a Vietnamese wedding or engagement tea ceremony?+

Yes. For a dam hoi or tea ceremony we keep the morning service light and quick — fresh rolls, savoury bites, fruit and tea — so it fits around the ceremony itself, then run a full menu for the reception later. We coordinate timings with the family so food does not land in the middle of the formalities.

Can you make Vietnamese food without fish sauce or shellfish?+

Yes. Fish sauce is central to most Vietnamese cooking, so we substitute rather than simply omit — a soy and mushroom based nuoc cham gives a comparable savoury depth for vegetarian, vegan and allergy-affected guests. Shellfish is kept to clearly separated dishes with their own tongs, and we label everything on the table.

Can you run a pho station at an event?+

Yes, and it works well because pho is assembled rather than cooked to order. We hold the broth hot, blanch noodles in batches, and build bowls at the station with herbs, bean sprout, chilli and lime going out on the side. It needs bench space, power, and a realistic ratio of staff to guests so the queue keeps moving.

Do you cater Tet, the Vietnamese Lunar New Year?+

Yes. Tet falls in late January or February and brings specific dishes, particularly banh chung or banh tet, thit kho trung, gio lua and xoi gac. It is the busiest period in the Vietnamese calendar, so we take bookings well ahead. Banh chung needs long cooking and lead time, which is the main scheduling constraint.

Can Vietnamese catering be fully vegan?+

Yes, and Vietnamese Buddhist cooking gives us a genuine foundation rather than substitutions. Com chay traditions cover mushroom pho broth, tofu and lemongrass dishes, vegan goi cuon, banh xeo and noodle salads. The key change is replacing fish sauce and shrimp paste with soy or vegan nuoc cham, which we do across the whole menu so nothing gets cross-contaminated.

How do you handle peanut allergies at a Vietnamese event?+

Carefully, because peanut appears in dipping sauces, garnishes and satay-style marinades. We identify every peanut-containing item at the planning stage, prepare allergen-free versions separately, and label clearly at the service point. Peanut garnish is served in its own container rather than scattered across dishes, so guests who need to avoid it can still eat the base dish.

Is Vietnamese food suitable for a large wedding in Melbourne?+

Yes, with the right format. Shared banquet service suits Vietnamese food well, with grilled meats, rice, noodle dishes and salads brought to the table in courses. Delicate items like goi cuon and banh xeo need live staffing or get limited to smaller counts. We balance assembled dishes with ones that hold so the kitchen is not the bottleneck.

Can you cater Vietnamese food without fish sauce?+

Yes, though it changes the profile honestly rather than hiding it. Nuoc mam carries much of the savoury depth in Vietnamese cooking, so we substitute with soy-based or vegan fish sauce alternatives and adjust the balance with lime, sugar and chilli. We can also keep a fish sauce version alongside, served separately, so guests who want the traditional seasoning get it.

In Detail

Vietnamese Catering For Melbourne Events And Workplaces

We cater Vietnamese menus for engagements, weddings, birthdays, corporate functions and community events around Melbourne, with heavy demand through Footscray, Sunshine, St Albans, Braybrook and Springvale. Rice paper rolls, bun cha, banh mi, bo la lot, caramelised clay pot dishes, pho broth for cold-weather events. We cook from South Kingsville, which puts us a short run from the markets where the herbs actually come from.

Vietnamese food is the best-behaved cuisine in a Melbourne office and the trickiest at an outdoor summer event. The flavour depends on fresh herbs, fresh lime and a nuoc cham that has not been sitting around — all of which degrade fast in heat. We build Vietnamese menus around what we can assemble on site and what genuinely travels. Clients get told which is which. Nobody wants a rice paper roll that has turned into a glued tube in a plastic tray.

Why Us

Why Our Vietnamese Catering Holds Up

Herbs bought the same morning

Vietnamese mint, perilla, coriander, saw-tooth herb and Thai basil are bought the morning of the event, not the day before. Wilted herbs are the single most common failure in Vietnamese catering. We store them damp and cold and plate them at the last possible moment.

Rolled and assembled on site

Rice paper rolls are rolled on site, period. The wrappers dehydrate and crack or fuse together within a couple of hours of rolling. We bring prepped fillings and roll in continuous batches during service, so the rolls on the table are always minutes old.

Light enough for long events

Vietnamese menus work for events that run across a whole afternoon because the food is not heavy. Grilled meats, broth, fresh vegetables and rice rather than cream and fried batter. Corporate clients book it specifically because the room does not slow down after lunch.

How It Runs

Fresh Herbs, Broth And Assembly Timing

Vietnamese catering is an assembly problem more than a cooking problem. Rice paper rolls must be rolled on site — wrappers rolled two hours out dry at the seams, crack, and stick to each other in the tray. We bring poached prawns, sliced pork, vermicelli, lettuce and herbs prepped and chilled, and staff roll through service. Banh xeo is the same, cooked crepe by crepe in a hot pan and eaten immediately. Herbs come out of the cold carriers in small handfuls rather than being dumped on a platter at setup, because thirty minutes on a warm table finishes them.

Pho is the other thing people ask for and it carries real constraints. The broth simmers for many hours in our kitchen and travels hot in insulated urns, but noodles cannot go anywhere near it before service — they swell and turn to paste. So pho runs as a station: broth held at temperature, noodles blanched in small batches on site, raw beef, herbs, bean sprouts, lime and chilli laid out for guests to finish their own bowl. That needs a power supply, bench space and a staffed line. Outdoor summer events add shade and ice logistics, because fish sauce dressings and fresh herbs sitting in Melbourne afternoon sun do not survive the speeches.

Worth Knowing

Vietnamese Catering Errors That Cost You Freshness

01

Rolling goi cuon too early

Rice paper rolls made hours ahead dry at the ends, split along the seam and the herbs inside go dark. We roll in batches through the service window and hold them covered and cool with separation so they do not fuse. For large guest counts this means dedicated staff on site. There is no shortcut that keeps them presentable.

02

Noodles sitting in broth

Pho assembled ahead of time arrives with bloated noodles and cloudy broth. The noodles keep drinking the liquid and the dish loses its clarity. We hold broth and noodles separately, blanch noodles in batches, and build each bowl at the point of service. Herbs, chilli and lime go out on the side so guests finish it themselves.

03

Banh mi assembled too far out

A banh mi is a crisp baguette with wet fillings, and those two things fight each other. Built early, the base goes soggy and the roll collapses when picked up. We assemble close to service, keep the wet elements contained, and transport components separately for drop-off so clients can finish them at the right moment.

04

Dressing noodle salads in advance

Bun and noodle salads dressed in the kitchen arrive wilted, with the herbs collapsed and the vermicelli clumped together. Nuoc cham also draws water from the vegetables and dilutes itself. We transport components separately, combine on site in batches, and serve dressing alongside so the salad stays crisp through the whole service.
